About Julio Ortiz
Dr. Julio Ortiz, DPM was born in Havana, Cuba, and moved to Florida with his family at age two. He was raised in Hialeah, Florida, and attended Miami Springs Senior High School, where he first became interested in Sports Medicine following an injury to his knee. Dr. Ortiz turned down several athletic scholarships to compete in college-level wrestling, in order to pursue his career in Sports Medicine. He attended Barry University, one of only two schools at the time that had obtained accreditation in their Sports Medicine degree program, and earned his degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training, with a minor in Biology. He continued to pursue his education at Barry University after developing an interest in Podiatric Medicine, and graduated in the top tenth percentile of his class, while serving as a tutor and mentor to his younger classmates during his final year of school.
Dr. Ortiz went on to complete externship rotations in many high-level residency programs, including Cambridge Health Alliance of Harvard University and Ft. Benning Hospital in Georgia. During his rotation at Ft. Benning Hospital, Dr. Ortiz participated in the medical and surgical care of traumatic injuries to soldiers completing military jump school.
Following completion of his podiatry education, Dr. Ortiz matched with his first choice for postgraduate surgical training at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, Florida. During his tenure, he served as Chief Resident from July 2006 to June 2007, and completed numerous courses on Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Surgery and Diabetic Limb Salvage. Dr. Ortiz has also completed specialty training in Reconstructive Adult and Pediatric Flatfoot Correction, Deformity Correction, Ankle Arthroscopy, Sports Medicine, and Total Ankle Joint Replacement.
Dr. Ortiz is one of only a handful of Podiatric Surgeons in South Florida trained in Total Ankle Joint Replacement, and one of the first to be trained in both the Wright Medical Inbone Total Ankle and the Small Bone Innovations (S.T.A.R.) Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement. He is one of only two surgeons in Palm Beach County with surgical privileges for Total Ankle Joint Replacement at both Bethesda Health Hospitals and JFK Medical Center.

If you think you might have a bunion, the first step is to consult a podiatrist or other foot and ankle specialist. They can evaluate your feet, assess the severity of your bunion(s), and provide treatment recommendations. They may suggest non-surgical options first, or they may recommend surgery. As with any surgical procedure, the cost of minimally invasive bunion surgery can vary widely depending on several factors – your geographic location, the surgeon and their practice, and the outpatient surgical center or hospital facility. Any costs you may incur will depend on your health insurance policy and the specifics of your medical condition(s). Only you and your podiatrist or surgeon can determine the best time for you to have bunion repair surgery. Factors like your age, the severity of your bunion or bunions, your level and types of physical activity, other foot and ankle conditions like hammertoes, other health conditions that may impact your surgery and healing, etc. Some people may choose to correct bunions while they’re mild, while others may prefer to wait. Recovery from bunion surgery depends on factors like the severity of the bunion(s), the patient’s age and other medical factors, whether other foot and ankle procedures are performed at the same time, how closely the patient is able to adhere to post-op instructions, and other variables.
